Super-high gas bill.?

I received an enormous gas bill from PSE&G in an apartment I recently moved into. The furnace has been off except for brief periods. I requested a meter reading (which was done) but the bill was not adjusted. The bill for the first month was $8, for the second $660. Has anyone had similar experiences?
